Ultramarine was a free public sculpture installation presented in Lincoln Center's Hearst Plaza in March 2024. The installation was nestled in the grove of trees between the Metropolitan Opera House and the Paul Milstein Reflecting Pool. Ultramarine was presented as part of Lincoln Center's Social Sculpture Project, curated by Mimi Lien and Itohan Edoloyi.
The installation began as a contemplation on the color blue. A combination of new and used/reclaimed materials were used to create mosaic and patchwork inspired abstractions of waters, skies, and lapis lazuli (the stone historically used to create ultramarine pigment).
The installation consisted of seven individual sculptures, each with an accompanying soundscape by Jeff Aaron Bryant.
There were six pentagon shaped ground pieces, each sitting four inches off the ground and wrapped around the bases of trees like a banner or bib. The seventh piece was large central sculpture standing five feet tall in the middle of the grove. Visitors were encouraged to enter the space from any side and listen the soundscapes as they wandered the grove and viewed the installation
